The Journey of Will O Wisp Bath & Body
Just a small-town girl living in a white squirrel world. Will O Wisp Bath & Body is based in Olney, Illinois. You guessed it! Home of the white squirrels. As a woman in her forties (yikes) with less than perfect skin, a ginger husband and two red-headed children, I am no stranger to skin irritation, sensitivities, unwanted skin reactions and skin care concerns. More sunscreen anyone?
I have always been cautious about the skincare products we use in our home. I know the frustration of attempting to live a healthier lifestyle while safety & ingredient standards become more and more a thing of the past and sustainability is abandoned for profit.
While I am very far from perfect, I like to put my energy (Which is admittedly limited. See age reference above.) into taking whatever small steps I can towards living a lifestyle that is more harmonious with our planet. It was with that mindset that Will O Wisp Bath & Body was born.
I first became interested in soap and cosmetic making in 2015. I enjoyed making simple formulas for my family and close friends to enjoy. While I was interested in pursuing my passion and turning it into a career, ongoing home construction, pets, jobs, kids and all the general obligations of life stood in my way. Maintain a sanitary work environment with two fluffy Australian Shepherds, sawdust and kids was an impossible task.
Fast forward to the beginning of 2020. Life as we knew it changed drastically for nearly everyone. I taught myself how to sew and set about making masks for members of my community. I have always loved working with my hands and channeling nervous energy into creativity. While I went through the repetitive motion of sewing mask after mask, around 5000 in total, I started to develop a plan that would allow me to pursue my passion for soap and cosmetic making.
In late 2020 I recruited a family member to help me construct the shed I was designing in my head. This shed would serve as my dedicated studio for soap and cosmetic making. The shed was constructed from mainly recycled, cedar electrical poles and delivered in the Spring of 2021.
With a suitable workspace finally in place, I began experimenting with soap and cosmetic on a larger scale. Through online courses, certificate programs, trial and error and extensive reading, I educated myself in the basics of cosmetic chemistry.
Over the last three years, I've dedicated myself to refining my knowledge of ingredients and formulations. This journey culminated in the creation of Will O Wisp Bath & Body, a testament to perseverance and a passion for quality skincare.
